How to Turn Off Google Location History on Android
Your Android phone can keep a detailed record of where you have been. Over time, that history can show your home address, your work route, the places you visit on weekends, and even how long you stay in each spot. Google used to call this Location History, and newer versions of the account now call it Timeline or Location services. Whatever the name on your phone, the idea is the same, and many people do not realize it is switched on until they look.
This guide shows how to turn off location history on an Android phone, how to delete what has already been saved, and what changes when you do. It also explains what features you may lose and how to keep the ones you care about, such as maps and emergency location sharing.
Why this history matters
Location data is valuable because it reveals patterns. A timeline of your movements can show when you are usually out, which places you visit often, and where you sleep at night. Even if you trust the company, it is sensible to limit how long that information is kept. Turning off the history stops new records from being stored, and deleting old ones clears what already exists.
Location history is different from your phone’s live location. Turning history off does not stop Maps from knowing where you are when you use it for directions. It stops the long term log that builds up in your account.
Step by step: turn off location history
Open the Settings app on your phone and tap Location. You will see a section for Location services or Google Location Services. Tap it, then look for Timeline or Location history. Switch the option off. Google may show a short message explaining what will happen, including that some personalized places may no longer appear. Confirm if you are happy with that.
If you cannot find the switch on the phone, open the Google Maps app, tap your profile picture, then Your Timeline. From the menu, choose Settings and privacy and look for Location and history or Timeline settings. You can turn off saving of location on this device or across all devices, depending on what you see.
Step by step: delete the saved history
Turning the feature off does not remove old records. To delete them, open Google Maps and go to Your Timeline. Tap the menu or the three dot icon, then choose Settings and privacy. Look for Delete all Timeline data or Manage Timeline, and choose the option to delete everything. You can also delete by date range if you only want to clear a specific month or trip.
You can also review your data on myactivity.google.com. Choose Location history or Maps activity, and remove entries. This is useful if you want to clear a particular period without losing the rest of your activity.
What you may lose
Turning off location history affects a few features. Google Photos may stop grouping pictures by place in some views, and Maps may give fewer personal suggestions based on where you have been. Your saved places, such as home and work, usually remain because they are stored separately. If you rely on the timeline to track mileage for work or taxes, export the data before you delete it. Maps offers a way to download your Timeline data for backup.
Live navigation, traffic updates, and location sharing with people you choose will still work. Location sharing in Google Maps is a separate feature, and you can review and stop it under sharing settings.
Check Google Location Accuracy and app permissions
Also check your location permissions. In Settings, go to Location, then App location permissions. Look through the list of apps and set each one to Allow only while using the app or Don’t allow. Apps that do not need location for their main job, such as a game or a flashlight tool, should have no access at all. Reducing permissions protects you better than deleting history alone.
While you are on the Location page, consider leaving Google Location Accuracy on. It improves how fast the phone can find you, which helps emergency services and Find My Device. You can keep accuracy on while still turning off the long term history.
Keep it turned off
After you change the settings, check the Timeline page again in a few weeks to confirm no new entries are being added. Google updates its apps frequently, and a new setup screen may ask you to turn history back on. If you see that prompt, decline it unless you have a clear reason to use the feature.
Turning off location history is one of the simplest privacy steps on Android. Turn it off, delete what has been saved, review app permissions, and keep an eye on updates. You keep the maps and safety features you need, and you stop building a long record of where you go.
Why the feature is worth reviewing once a year
Privacy settings tend to drift over time. A new phone setup, a software update, or a new app sign in can turn location history back on without you noticing. Once a year, open your Timeline or Location services page and confirm it is still off. Also check whether any app now has background location access that you never intended to give. Under Settings, then Location, then App location permissions, look for anything set to Allow all the time that does not need it.
Regular checks take only a few minutes. They also help you notice when a family member or shared account has access to your location through a sharing feature, which you can review in Google Maps under location sharing.
