Hand holding an Android phone, how to reduce data usage

Let us be honest, data in Nigeria is not cheap. You buy a fat bundle on Monday, you are “managing” by Thursday, and by the weekend you are begging someone to send you MB. If this is your story every single month, your phone is probably wasting data behind your back without telling you. The good news is that you can take back control. In this guide I will show you simple settings on your Android phone that will reduce data usage and make your MTN, Glo, Airtel or 9mobile bundle last much longer.

You do not need to be a tech person to do any of this. If you can send a WhatsApp message, you can follow these steps. Grab your phone, let us go step by step.

Why Your Data Finishes So Fast

Before we start blocking things, it helps to understand where your data actually goes. Most times, the data is not even finishing because of the things you are doing. It is the things happening in the background that drain the bundle quietly. Here are the usual suspects:

  • Apps updating themselves automatically on mobile data
  • WhatsApp and social media downloading every photo and video on its own
  • Background apps refreshing even when you are not using them
  • Auto play videos on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X
  • Cloud backups uploading your photos silently

Once you see the main offenders, cutting them down becomes easy. Let us start with the one setting that does most of the work.

Step 1: Turn On Data Saver Mode

Android has a built in feature called Data Saver. When it is on, it stops most apps from using data in the background. This single switch can save you plenty, especially if you forget to off your data at night. Here is how to turn it on:

  1. Open your phone Settings
  2. Tap Network and internet (on some phones it is called Connections or SIM and network)
  3. Tap Data Saver or Data usage
  4. Toggle Data Saver on

That is it. If there are one or two apps you still want to use data freely, like WhatsApp for work, you can add them to the “unrestricted data” list so Data Saver does not block them. The names of these menus change small small depending on your phone brand, whether it is Tecno, Infinix, Samsung, itel or Redmi, but the idea is the same everywhere.

Step 2: Find The Apps Eating Your Data

Your phone keeps a record of how much data each app has used. This is like checking your account statement to see who has been collecting your money. To check yours:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap Network and internet, then Mobile data usage or Data usage
  3. You will see a list of apps from the one using the most data down to the smallest

Do not be surprised if YouTube, TikTok, Instagram or the Play Store are sitting at the top. Once you know the greedy ones, you can tap each app and turn off its background data. That way the app only uses data when you open it yourself, not when it likes.

Step 3: Stop Apps From Updating On Mobile Data

This one is a silent killer. You buy data in the morning, and before afternoon the Play Store has used a big chunk updating ten apps you did not even ask it to touch. Let us put a stop to that:

  1. Open the Google Play Store
  2. Tap your profile picture at the top right
  3. Go to Settings, then Network preferences
  4. Tap Auto update apps and choose Over Wi-Fi only

Now your apps will only update when you connect to free Wi-Fi, maybe at the office, a friend’s house, or that one spot in your area with public Wi-Fi. Your bundle will thank you.

Step 4: Control WhatsApp Auto Download

WhatsApp is life in Nigeria, but those family group videos, “good morning” images and endless memes are eating your data one download at a time. You can tell WhatsApp to stop downloading media automatically:

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots at the top right
  2. Go to Settings, then Storage and data
  3. Under Media auto-download, tap When using mobile data
  4. Uncheck everything, or leave only photos if you like

After this, media will only download when you tap it. So if someone sends a 30 minute video in the group, it will not just enter your phone and finish your data. You decide what you want to open.

Step 5: Reduce Video Quality On Streaming Apps

Video is the biggest data chopper of all. Watching one HD video can swallow more data than hundreds of WhatsApp chats. If you must watch on mobile data, lower the quality:

  • YouTube: tap your profile, go to Settings, then Video quality preferences, and set “Data saving” for mobile networks
  • TikTok: go to Settings and privacy, then Data Saver, and turn it on
  • Netflix and others: look for a playback or video quality setting and pick the lower option

You may not enjoy crystal clear 1080p, but honestly, on a small phone screen you will barely notice the difference. What you will notice is your data lasting two or three times longer.

Small Habits That Save Plenty Data

Beyond the settings, a few simple habits go a long way. None of them are hard, they just need small discipline:

  • Off your mobile data before you sleep, so nothing runs while you are not watching
  • Use free Wi-Fi for big downloads, updates and movies whenever you can find it
  • Turn off auto play for videos on Facebook, Instagram and X
  • Close apps you are not using instead of leaving them all open
  • Turn off cloud photo backup on mobile data, or set it to Wi-Fi only
  • Clear the cache of heavy apps once in a while

If you do even half of these, you will see a clear difference by the end of the month. Many people have gone from buying data every week to buying once a month just by changing these settings.

A Quick Word On Data Bundles

Saving data is one side of the coin. The other side is buying the right bundle in the first place. Compare the plans your network offers, because sometimes a slightly bigger plan gives you far more value per naira. You can always check the official plan pages, like the MTN Nigeria website, to see the latest data offers before you recharge. Buying blindly is how people waste money on plans that do not match how they actually use their phone.

Wrapping Up

Data is expensive, but your phone does not have to drain it so fast. Turn on Data Saver, block background data for the greedy apps, stop auto updates on mobile data, tame WhatsApp auto download, and lower your video quality. These five moves alone will stretch your bundle in a big way, and the small daily habits will seal the deal.

Try it for one week and watch how your data starts behaving itself. For more easy phone tips, check out our other guides under Smartphones and Internet & Wi-Fi. Your wallet will thank you.
