Tiwa Savage Opens Up on Why She Didn’t Like Mavin’s Hit ‘Dorobucci’ at First
Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has admitted she wasn’t impressed when she first heard Mavin Records’ smash hit Dorobucci.
Speaking with NotJustOk, the singer recalled that Don Jazzy played her the beat while they were in Dubai for her wedding. At the time, she didn’t realize it was a Mavin project and secretly felt the instrumental sounded off.
“I don’t know if people know this, but Don Jazzy was playing the beat in our hotel during my wedding in Dubai. I didn’t want to tell him, but I thought it was such a terrible song,” Tiwa admitted.
After the wedding, Don Jazzy encouraged her to return to Nigeria to work on what he described as an important new record. Though she initially wanted to stay on honeymoon, she eventually flew back to the studio and discovered the track had been completely transformed.
“When I got back and heard the final version, I was shocked,” she said, noting how different it sounded from the rough cut she’d heard earlier.
Despite the improvements, Tiwa remained unconvinced at first. She revealed she was the last of the Mavin crew to record her verse. “Everyone else had already recorded their parts. I was just looking at them like, ‘Do you guys really like this?’” she added with a laugh.
Interestingly, Dorobucci wasn’t the only song she doubted. Tiwa also confessed she wasn’t fond of Eminado at the time of recording, yet both tracks went on to dominate charts and become fan favorites across Africa and beyond.
Looking back, Tiwa gave credit to Don Jazzy’s vision and instinct for hits. “We all know what happened to that record,” she said. “Don Jazzy just has that magic touch. I didn’t even know I’d end up on the song, but it turned out to be phenomenal.”
