Court Grants Nollywood Actress Angela Okorie Bail After Abuja Hearing

Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has been granted bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja following her recent arrest and arraignment over an alleged cybercrime case that has attracted wide public attention.

The court ruling was delivered on Friday, January 30, after Justice Emeka Nwite reviewed a bail application submitted by her legal team. The judge approved bail in the sum of five million naira, with one surety required to provide the same amount.

Angela Okorie was earlier remanded in custody at the Suleja Correctional Centre after being arrested by officers of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department and later transferred to Abuja for prosecution. Her remand followed her arraignment on amended charges linked to cyberstalking and defamation under Nigeria’s Cybercrime Act.

According to court documents, the prosecution accused the actress of using her social media platforms between 2024 and 2025 to send messages considered offensive and threatening to fellow Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson Okojie. The messages were described as capable of damaging reputation and causing public unrest.

During the bail hearing, Angela Okorie’s lawyer argued that she is a well known public figure with a fixed residence and no intention of running away from trial. The defence also told the court that she was willing to comply with all conditions set by the court.

The prosecution opposed the bail application, claiming that there were other matters still being investigated and alleging that the actress had previously failed to report back to authorities while on administrative bail. They urged the court to deny bail on those grounds.

After listening to both sides, Justice Nwite ruled that there was no strong evidence to show that Angela Okorie would abscond if released. The judge granted bail in the interest of justice and directed that the surety must meet specific conditions, including proof of identity and means.

Angela Okorie pleaded not guilty to all charges when they were read in court. Following the bail ruling, the case was adjourned to March 23, 2026, for continuation of trial.

The legal battle has sparked conversations across social media and within Nollywood, especially due to the high profile status of the actresses involved. Many fans and industry observers are closely following developments as the case progresses.
