Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, are set to face Italy in the Round of 16 of the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The Nigerian girls secured qualification after a convincing 4-0 victory over Samoa in their final Group D match on Saturday, finishing among the best third-placed teams.
Their next challenge comes on Tuesday, October 28, when they meet Group A winners Italy, who advanced to the knockout stage after an impressive group campaign, winning all three matches.
Italy began their journey with a 3-0 win over Costa Rica, followed by a 3-1 victory against hosts Morocco, and sealed top spot with a thrilling 4-3 triumph over Brazil.
For the Flamingos, after back-to-back losses in their first two group games, they bounced back strongly against Samoa. Queen Joseph led the charge with a brace, while captain Shakirat Moshood and Azeezat Oduntan also found the net.
Joseph opened scoring in the 13th minute and doubled the lead in the 28th, before Moshood converted a penalty in the 34th minute. Oduntan rounded off the scoring in the 67th minute to secure the emphatic win.
