Flamingos Fall Again at 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, suffered another setback at the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Rabat, losing 1-0 to France in their second Group D fixture on Wednesday night, October 22.

Following their 4-1 defeat to Canada in the opening match, coach Bankole Olowookere’s side showed greater composure and tactical discipline, holding their own for much of the contest. However, with just nine minutes remaining, France’s Maïssa Fathallah capitalized on a rebound after goalkeeper Elizabeth Boniface failed to make a clean save, scoring the game’s only goal.

The Nigerian girls started with intent, pressing high and defending resolutely while carving out a few half-chances. Despite their improved performance, the team struggled to convert opportunities as France’s defense remained solid.

France’s Manchester City forward, Rachael Adedini—eligible to play for Nigeria—featured in the first half before being replaced by Camille Marmillot at the break.

Despite clear signs of progress, the late concession proved decisive. The defeat leaves Nigeria at the bottom of Group D, with no points from two games.

The Flamingos now face Samoa on Saturday, October 25, in a must-win encounter. Victory is essential if they are to keep their hopes of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams alive.
