Boko Haram Using Drones for Attacks, Says Zulum
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has urged the Federal Government to urgently review Nigeria’s air defence and security systems after Boko Haram terrorists reportedly used a drone to attack a military base in Mafa Local Government Area.
Speaking to journalists in Mafa on Friday, Zulum described the development as a “dangerous escalation,” expressing alarm over the insurgents’ growing technological capabilities.
“This issue of drones is frightening. In Dikwa, I was informed drones were also used. The proliferation of such technology in the hands of non-state actors is a serious national concern. We must act quickly to curb the uncontrolled use of armed drones,” he said.
The governor warned that the terrorists’ ability to deploy drones exposes a major weakness in Nigeria’s airspace security. He emphasized the need for immediate action to fortify the nation’s borders and enhance air defence systems.
“This challenge goes beyond Borno State. Our borders must be tightened, and our airspace reinforced. Now is the time for our security architecture to upgrade its capabilities to counter the threat of armed drones,” Zulum added.
While commending the Nigerian Armed Forces for their continued sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, the governor called on citizens to remain vigilant and support security agencies with timely intelligence.
“We are here to sympathize with the victims of the recent attack and to reassure our people. I urge residents to stay alert and report any credible information to the military. The Civilian Joint Task Force must also remain steadfast in supporting the armed forces,” he stated.
Zulum disclosed that credible intelligence had earlier warned of a possible attack on Mafa and stressed the importance of stronger coordination between state and federal authorities, the military, and other security stakeholders.
“I believe there could be elements of sabotage that must be identified and addressed. This is not the time for blame; it’s a time for unity and collective action,” the governor concluded.
