Court Grants Bail to Sowore and 12 Others
A Magistrate’s Court in Kuje, Abuja, has granted bail to activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, alongside Aloy Ejimakor (counsel to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu), Prince Emmanuel Kanu (Kanu’s brother), and ten others, following their arraignment over the recent #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja.
Each of the thirteen defendants was granted bail in the sum of ₦500,000, with two sureties in the same amount. They were charged with inciting public disturbance and breach of peace.
Reports indicate that Ejimakor, Emmanuel Kanu, and ten others were arrested during the protest on October 20 in Abuja and later remanded at the Kuje Correctional Facility. Sowore was reportedly arrested on October 23 at the Federal High Court, Abuja, where he had gone to show solidarity during Kanu’s trial.
The arrests have drawn widespread condemnation from civil rights and pro-democracy groups, who accused authorities of attempting to silence dissent.
The court’s decision to grant bail is expected to calm growing tensions among supporters of the detained activists as their legal team works to fulfill the bail conditions.
