INEC Chairman Amupitan to Hold Inaugural Meeting With Directors Today
The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN), will today (Thursday) preside over his first official meeting with the commission’s directors in Abuja.
According to a notice issued on Wednesday by Wilfred Ifogah, Deputy Director of Publicity, on behalf of the Director of Voter Education and Publicity, the meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the INEC Conference Hall.
The notice reads in part
> “The Honourable Chairman of the Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, will be meeting with directors as follows — Date: Thursday, 23rd October, 2025; Time: 1:30 p.m.; Venue: Conference Hall, INEC Headquarters, Abuja. In view of the above, members of the INEC Press Corps are invited to cover the opening session of the event.”
Amupitan’s maiden meeting comes shortly after his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The ceremony officially marks the beginning of his tenure as INEC’s substantive chairman, succeeding Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose term expired earlier this month.
A 58-year-old Professor of Law at the University of Jos, Amupitan was confirmed by the Senate last Thursday through a voice vote led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. His confirmation followed a thorough screening during which he addressed lawmakers on electoral reforms and constitutional issues.
President Tinubu had nominated Amupitan based on his integrity, non-partisan disposition, and expertise in constitutional and international law to head the electoral commission.
Prior to his confirmation, National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu had served as Acting INEC Chairman, overseeing stakeholder engagements and administrative preparations at the commission’s headquarters pending the formal handover.
