Kwankwaso Predicts Major Upset in 2027 Elections, Warns Political Defectors
Former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that the 2027 general elections will surprise his political opponents. He cautioned that those who deserted the NNPP or betrayed the Kwankwasiyya movement would face political repercussions at the polls.
Kwankwaso, who turned 69 this week, made the remarks during his birthday celebration in Kano and reiterated them in an interview with BBC Hausa in Kaduna. The 2023 NNPP presidential candidate warned that acts of defection and disloyalty would not go unpunished.
“Anyone who thinks they can abandon us and still return to Kano to win elections is only deceiving themselves,” Kwankwaso stated. “Our movement will continue to respond to betrayal, and our political structure will not tolerate disloyalty.”
He emphasized that the Kwankwasiyya philosophy is rooted in loyalty and principles, not hostility.
“We don’t pick fights with anyone. Those who leave either do so on their own or because of misconduct. If someone publicly disrespects us despite knowing their past, we have no choice but to act,” he added.
Addressing speculation about a rift with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Kwankwaso dismissed such claims as falsehoods spread by political adversaries.
“There is no issue between me and Governor Abba. We gave him the platform to perform, and he is doing his best. It’s just that some mischievous people are trying to create division where none exists,” he said.
He further explained that Yusuf’s selection as governor was the outcome of a deliberate and thoughtful process that began years ago.
“We assessed our options and found him to be the most qualified as far back as 2019. We gave him the opportunity to serve, and we continue to support him. Anyone claiming that I control contracts or the government is simply being mischievous. The truth will eventually prevail,” Kwankwaso asserted.
2027 Will Be Different
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Kwankwaso predicted a shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, noting that the electorate—especially young people—has become more politically aware and less influenced by money politics.
“Those boasting about defeating us in 2027 are only deluding themselves. Things have changed—young Nigerians are now more politically conscious. The coming elections won’t be business as usual; voters now understand the game better,” he said.
Reaffirming his confidence in victory, the NNPP leader maintained that the party and the Kwankwasiyya movement would remain a formidable political force, particularly in northern Nigeria.
“We are confident of success because our movement is people-centered and built on service. Those who betrayed our cause will witness the consequences of their actions at the ballot box,” Kwankwaso concluded.
His remarks come amid increasing political realignments across the country, with Kano expected to remain one of the most competitive battlegrounds ahead of the 2027 general elections.
