PDP Northern Leaders Endorse Kabiru Turaki as Consensus Candidate for National Chairman

Northern leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have endorsed former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, as the consensus candidate for the position of National Chairman.

The endorsement was made during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday night, attended by prominent PDP figures, including Bala Mohammed (Bauchi State Governor), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau State Governor), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa State Governor), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara State Governor), and the party’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.

The PDP National Convention, where new members of the National Working Committee (NWC) will be elected, is set to take place on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibaan, Oyo State.

However, the lead-up to the convention has been clouded by legal hurdles. A suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025, has been filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, seeking to stop the exercise.

The plaintiffs — Austine Nwachukwu (Imo PDP Chairman), Amah Abraham Nnanna (Abia PDP Chairman), and Turnah George (PDP South-South Secretary) — are asking the court to restrain the party from proceeding with the convention.

The case, reportedly backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, is scheduled for hearing on October 31, 2025.

It will be recalled that in August, the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) zoned the party’s presidential ticket to the South, making the North the expected zone to produce the next National Chairman, a decision that paved the way for Turaki’s endorsement.
