Rep Dasuki Steps Aside, Makes Historic Move to Empower Younger Leaders

In a rare show of political selflessness, Rep. Abdussamad Dasuki, who represents Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has announced that he will not seek re-election in the 2027 general election. Describing his decision as a “personal sacrifice,” Dasuki said it was driven by his desire to create opportunities for younger Nigerians to serve.

Dasuki, a respected figure in the National Assembly since his first election in 2011, explained that his choice stemmed from a deep belief that Nigeria’s democracy must evolve by allowing new voices and fresh energy to emerge.

> “The Nigeria we yearn for is only possible through sacrifice,” he said. “After consulting with my team, my leader, my family, and my conscience, I have decided not to seek re-election to the House of Representatives in 2027. This decision is not from fatigue or disillusionment, but from conviction, hope, and faith in the future we desire.”

As interim chairman of the Future Is Now Project—a youth inclusion initiative launched on October 1, 2025—Dasuki reiterated his call for generational renewal. The project advocates that 70% of House of Representatives seats in 2027 be held by Nigerians under 40.

> “I am still a youth by all standards, but I have crossed the 40-year mark we set,” he noted. “If we truly believe in our message, we must be ready to make sacrifices. This, dear constituents, is mine. I choose to make space for the vision we declared.”

Dasuki’s announcement has been hailed as a landmark moment in Nigerian politics, where voluntary exits from public office are rare. Many view his decision as a living expression of the intergenerational justice movement he helped pioneer—aimed at bridging the leadership gap between young and old.

Reflecting on his 14-year public service career spanning the State House of Assembly, the House of Representatives, and the State Executive Council, Dasuki expressed profound gratitude to his constituents, colleagues, and political mentor, former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, for his trust and mentorship.

> “To my constituents, you gave me your trust, and I carried it with pride. To our youth, I say: no more waiting, no more excuses, no more silence. Step forward, take your place, and lead with courage, integrity, and vision,” he urged.

The lawmaker reaffirmed his dedication to Sokoto State and Nigeria, pledging to remain active in mentorship, policy advocacy, and youth empowerment.

> “As I step aside, I hope to leave behind a new kind of legacy—one that shows leadership is also about knowing when to make way for a new generation,” he concluded.
